Building Your Author Career
Despite Ever Shifting Markets

The publishing world, like any creative industry, ebbs and flows. Some seasons bring soaring sales and excitement, while others feel like a slow trickle of progress. If you’ve been feeling the weight of a shifting market, you’re not alone. The key is not to lose hope but to focus on what you can control—your brand, your backlist, and your connection with readers.

Your Brand is Your Promise and Foundation

Markets shift, trends fade, and platforms change, but one thing remains steady--your author brand. Whether you write small-town romance, cozy mysteries, or fantasy adventures, your voice and storytelling style are what draw readers to you.  Stay true to your brand by consistently delivering the kind of books your audience loves. Lean into what makes you and your stories special, and don’t feel pressured to chase every new trend.
Instead of worrying about external changes, ask yourself:
  • What themes or tropes resonate most with my readers? Am I delivering on my brand promise?
  • How can I strengthen my branding through my website, social media, or newsletters? When my posts come across their feed, do they KNOW it's me?
  • Am I showing up authentically and consistently for my audience? Whichever social media platforms you are on, BE THERE. Don't post and run. Spend time engaging with your readers.

Build Up Your Backlist, It's a Long-Term Asset

One of the best ways to weather market fluctuations is by leveraging your backlist. Every book you publish is a potential income stream that can work for you long after launch week. During times of uncertainty, focus on building up your backlist keeping your brand promise in mind.
If sales dip, consider:
  • Running a backlist promotion to introduce new readers to your books. Make sure to have your newsletter sign up link in your backmatter.
  • Bundling older books into box sets or themed collections. Reuse your assets in new ways to reach new readers.
  • Refreshing covers or blurbs to better appeal to today’s market. Trends change, and it's necessary for us to keep up. Research the covers in the top 100 on Amazon and make changes to your covers or blurbs as needed to stay current with market trends.
  • Creating companion content like bonus scenes, prequels, or spin-offs to reignite interest in your backlist.
A strong backlist gives you stability when new releases slow down or unexpected challenges arise.

Know Your Readers and Meet Them Where They Are

Reader habits evolve, and the way they find and consume books shifts over time. Instead of feeling discouraged, see this as an opportunity to adapt.
  • If engagement on one social media platform is dropping, analyze what posts are still resonating with your readers and do more of those. You can also try experimenting with another platform but remember - don't post and run. Readers want engagement!
  • If readers are showing more interest in audio or print formats, explore those options. Consider special editions or other fun ways to make your backlist fresh and exciting.
  • Be sure to know who you are trying to reach, and where that demographic will most likely be in the world of social media. It's important to be targeting YOUR ideal reader.
It’s all about keeping the connection alive and making sure readers can find you no matter where the market moves.

Keep Showing Up!

Above all, don’t let market fluctuations shake your confidence or steal your joy in storytelling. Publishing is a long game, and the authors who endure are the ones who keep showing up, book after book. Focus on what you can control—your craft, your marketing efforts, and your relationship with your readers.
There will always be ups and downs, but the stories you write matter. Your readers are out there, waiting for the next book that will make them laugh, swoon, or escape into another world. Keep going. Keep writing. And most of all—keep believing in the power of your words.
